Salute to Women 2021: Meet the Honorees - Dorothy Reed

Dorothy Reed is the Assistant Dean Emeritus in the College of Education (COE), Purdue University. She received the B.S. degree from Tuskegee University, the M.ED. from Purdue University and the Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration from Michigan State University. Reed joined Purdue University’s College of Education in 2008.Reed provided leadership for the Office of Engagement for K – 12 outreach. She assisted in linking COE engagement with related efforts by other Purdue units to increase the visibility of the COE community. She worked to establish long-term relationships with external constituents to develop special programs and partnerships. She worked to develop programs and partnerships for recruitment and retention of diverse student populations. Reed assisted in launching the P-12 Portal for the university, which allows Purdue University faculty and staff to add their upcoming engagement activities to the campus wide portal.Reed served as a member of the Black Caucus of Faculty and Staff at Purdue, a board member of Food Finders Foodbank, the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra and the Lafayette Symphony Foundation. Reed and her spouse, Dean Willie Reed, previously co-sponsored the Heart Ball for the American Heart Association. Reed served on the Lafayette Chamber of Commerce Education Selection Committee to award the Golden Apple Awards to deserving teachers for the past five plus years.Reed served on the steering committee for the University’s strategic plan, New Synergies 2008-2014. She is the recipient of the 2007 Fort Dodge Animal Health Lifetime Mentorship Award and was recognized by the Purdue Mortarboard Chapter as a Distinguished Woman Leader for 2008. Reed is the first recipient of the 2016 Purdue University Staff Engagement Award given by the Office of the Provost. Prior to her appointment in the college of education, she was assistant provost and founded the LBGTQ advisory group to the Provost and co-authored the White Paper “Creating an LBGTQ inclusive Purdue”. Most recently, Reed was the inaugural recipient of the 2019 Cornerstone Award given by Michigan State University, College of Natural Science and the Charles Drew Scholars Program for her leadership during the assault on Affirmative Action in the state of Michigan.Reed continues to serve as a mentor, ally and supporter of Purdue University and the Lafayette Community.Purchase Tickets   More Information
